Taking PrEP

It’s possible you’ve already heard of PrEP or Truvada. There’s a lot of buzz around PrEP, for good reason! It’s a completely new way that men who have sex with men (and other folx) are taking care of themselves while having the sex that they enjoy.

PrEP, short for pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a pill that can stop HIV from forming in the body when taken as prescribed. It can be taken daily or on demand (days before and after a sexual encounter). If PrEP is taken according to recommendations, it is unlikely that someone would be infected, even if they are exposed to HIV.

Keep in mind that PrEP cannot prevent other STBBIs such as Hep C, syphilis or gonorrhea. Doctors recommend getting tested every 3 months while on PrEP.

Research has shown that PrEP is successful when taken by transmasculine folks on hormones. Currently it must be taken daily because PrEP takes longer to adhere in folks assigned female at birth who are having frontal sex. In fact, it can take up to 9 days to be at full effect.
